Australian Defence Apparel Pty Ltd – Armour Technologies

The primary goal of this project was to develop a technology which would allow for low cost, mass production of aramid backings used in helmets. Integral to this was the goal of producing these relatively complex geometries without reliance on fabric splicing, and without the use of high pressure matched metal tooling to achieve the required shape.

Over the course of this project a new class of armour materials was also developed, namely polymer-ceramic composites which displayed promising ballistic properties. These materials were included in the development work across all stages of the project, as their initial efficacy pointed toward future application in composite armour systems. These materials were the result of an extensive survey of various armour systems conducted in the first stage of the project.

The work undertaken by MANTRA on this project was focused on delivering processes and materials which satisfied the manufacturing and cost goals of the project as they applied to the technologies developed in the early stages of the project.

Paths forward have been identified and it is expected that this collaboration will continue beyond the life of the current project.
