Top Water Saving Tips to Protect the Environment

Water Saving

Saving water should be a significant plumbing consideration across the world. Countries globally suffer from increasingly severe water shortages every year, and as global climates change, these shortages are expected to affect more and more people.

Fortunately, there are numerous things that you can do to ensure you’re saving as much water as possible. We recommend speaking with your local plumber to ensure you’re not using old, inefficient plumbing systems. However, there are also plenty of things that you can do in your own time to save water, including:

Using Water-Saving Appliances

Modern appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines are becoming increasingly water-efficient. If you can afford it, we’d recommend upgrading to a more water-efficient appliance as soon as possible. You might be surprised by just how large the water savings are.

Install a Low-Flush Toilet

Similarly, low-flush toilets are becoming increasingly efficient as well. Although they became increasingly popular around twenty years ago, many people were put off from using early models because they didn’t always work like traditional toilets.

However, more modern advances in toilet technology mean that low-flush toilets now work great. If you don’t already have them in your house, it could be worth speaking to a plumber to get them fitted.

Use Water Restrictors

You might not realise it, but it’s super easy to reduce the amount of water you’re using by installing water restrictors in your taps and showerheads. These small plastic rings don’t allow water to flow at full speed. They will reduce your pressure and help you save significant amounts of water.

In general, water restrictors are very easy to install. A quick internet search will bring up a suite of tutorial videos, while your local plumbing store assistant should also be able to help. However, you could also pay a plumber to install them – it’s a quick job, so it won’t be overly expensive.

Fix Leaks ASAP

It’s also essential to fix leaking taps and faucets immediately. There are two reasons for this:

  1. First, small leaks will progressively worsen over time, resulting in significant problems if not fixed quickly.
  2. On top of this, even tiny leaks can waste a significant amount of water per year. Let’s look at an example.

Let’s say that you’ve got three taps in your house that drip slowly. In general, you probably wouldn’t worry about these, but you should be! If each tap drips once per second, it will be wasting more than 20 litres per day. This makes a total of well over 20,000 litres per year – which is a pretty large amount of water if you ask us!

Saving water doesn’t have to be difficult. Small plumbing modifications can deliver great results, especially if you can train yourself to use water more efficiently. We’d highly recommend speaking with your local plumbing contractors to learn more!
